Autonomous cars are coming, this is a fact. The vast majority of society doesn’t want to drive, & they don’t want to smell other people. So they want autonomous cars, sorry car people this is our future, we can fight against it all we want, it won’t help.
In the lead up to this future we need to change the way we do car licenses, why do Bristol and Justin I-don’t-give-a-crap-about-driving-I-just-want-to-Instagram need to get taught how to drive a vehicle to buy one? Well they don’t, at least not in my opinion which is the only one that matters . We can teach them how to stop the car in event of an emergency maybe and leave the training at that. I think we should embrace a bit of the United Kingdoms playbook and give license to drive cars based a bit on skill. As illustrated by the difference between B class and B auto class license.

I say we take this to its only logical conclusion, we make this shit all skilled based. In a few years when the robot overlords take over our roadways, we should be prepared.
As the class’s go up you retain the ability of the class(es) below your current level.
‘ F’ class
Autonomous only class! You get taught how to start and stop the car. How to take over in event of emergency and safety put it on the side of the road. (No body style restrictions)
‘D’ class
Self drive, but only cars with collision avoidance technology with automatic transmission only. The car must be able to communicate with other cars both autonomous & not. (Sedan, coupe, hatchback & wagon body styles only!)
‘ C’ class
Self drive, without any additional crash avoidance technology, automatic transmissions only, must have car fitted to communicate with other cars (if retroactively) to aid in avoiding collision with lower class license. (Can drive any body style of vehicle that is less then 37000 KG)
‘B’ class
Pretty much a license for now, can self drive anything, no restriction on transmission or tech in car
‘ A’ class
Same as a ‘B’ class with additional training. As highways get more automated, the speed will increase for autonomous cars. eventually we will have unrestricted speed lanes for autonomous cars, people who attained this license will be able to self drive in these lanes. Any collision that happens because of a self driver in a “unrestricted speed” lane will immediately and permanently loss their ‘A’ license & the ability to obtain a class ‘A’ license as well as possible permanent demotion to another even lower rank (C-F) or suspended permanently.
So you’re welcome world. I just solved the next unforeseen crisis, drivers licenses. You may direct all future world problems to me. If for some reason you think you have an idea that’s even better than this let me know, or if somehow you think I got something wrong.

Well, it kinda messes with the current class scheme in the US but that’s just moving a few letters around. The other thing is that I think there are too many classes. I’m thinking just 1 additional class - Autonomous class. This would be simple instruction that you would be required to renew/refresh annually via online instruction: What to do in the event of a system failure, what are your responsibilities, etc. At least until high GVW classes adopt the tech in which case you would need a regular class C plus several endorsements (autonomous class, Class D, etc)

Yeah, you could just add 1 class, but what's the fun in that? I like to think that we are missing out on a golden opportunity to redo the whole system over, and keep Idiots out of big cars, and give us car lovers a unrestricted speed. With other predictable drivers sharing those lanes with us.

I’d agree, revamp the system.
But, it’ll never happen. Driving “training” is a joke here and has been since the dawn of time. No one is willing to expend political capital to change this anytime soon. Because reasons.
We should have tiered licensing for Car, Truck, Moto, and Commercial. We can’t even do that (besides Commercial which everybody bitches about). I do like the idea of Autonomous endorsements for each class. Perhaps make multiple levels of autonomous endorsements to cover all the basis.
I need Yamaha robot guy to moto me in to work everyday. What tier do I need to add to my M endorsement???

got to ask. where would motorcycle riders slot in? I mean its pretty obvious its going to be in either B or A, but which? there are a lot of ppl tht I know who ride and I wouldnt put them on anything faster then a 500. but they are still way more skilled then most other drivers.

I would say they have their own license scale, I doubt autonomous motorcycles will ever be a thing.

So what if I want to drive a 1960's Land Rover that has a max speed of 65mph and has a dog gearbox?

Get a ‘B’ or a ‘A’ class, just be mindful in those unrestricted speed lanes

It all works well until some people get caught having sex in a moving car. During morning rush hour. In front of an elementary school. “Mommy, What are they doing in their car?”

I think that autonomous cars will probably come with shades for this very reason pretty early after their main stream adoption

But then how would they be able to stop the car in an emergency with the shades down. They wouldn’t see it and if they did, they couldn’t react fast enough.

This is a good point, for these matters, I will refer mechanical ideas to Jason Torchinsky

That’s what 95+% of the population should have, realistically.
